Woods pleased with second round performance
11/08/2007
Tiger Woods says he was just looking to get back in contention before carding a round that equalled the course record at Southern Hills in the second round of the PGA Championship.
Woods jumped up the leaderboard by 22 places after his round of 63 but admits the job is only half done and feels he has to maintain his form if he wants to seal victory on Sunday.
The 31-year-old said he was not overly disappointed to have missed out on beating the record after his birdie attempt on the final hole narrowly went wide of the cup.
He said: "I hit a good putt and I thought I made it. It would have been nice to have got the record.
"I was just trying to get myself back into the tournament, and lo and behold, here I am.
"The putt on 12 was huge to keep the round going," claimed Woods, who holed a 35-yarder.
"[There are] a lot of holes to play and I need to continue to do what I am doing. I know there are a lot of guys playing well, and hopefully I can play a little bit better," he concluded.
Scott Verplank, an Okalahoma native, is delighted to have the support of the home crowd to spur him on. It seems to have had the desired effect as the 43-year-old is just two shots behind Woods.
He said: "I can feel the support and it's helpful. It would be more than a dream come true [to win the tournament]"
Third-placed Geoff Ogilvy was unhappy with himself for bogeying the final two holes but feels he is still in with a strong chance of snatching victory away from Woods.
He said: "If I hit a couple more fairways, I'm putting good enough that I think I could win."
