Woods primed for final charge at US Open
15/06/2008
World number one Tiger Woods will take a one-shot lead into the final round of the US Open on Sunday after a spectacular third-round effort.
The American carded a one-under-par 70 on day three to overhaul overnight leader Stuart Appleby, whose challenge collapsed as he slumped to an ugly nine-over-par round of 79.
But it was the sparkling play of Woods that left many supporters in awe at Torrey Pines as he carded two eagles in his final six holes of the day to storm to the top of the leaderboard.
England's Lee Westwood is bidding to become the first British winner of the US Open since 1970 and will go into the final round one shot behind Woods after equalling his one-under-par effort of 70.
American Rocco Mediate is the only other player in the field to have broken par through the tournament thus far as he sits on one under after three rounds, despite a one-over-par 73 on Saturday.
Australia's Geoff Ogilvy, who won the US Open two years ago, and DJ Trahan of the United States sit joint fourth on one over par for the tournament.
The second-highest European on the leaderboard behind Westwood is Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez, but he was unable to reproduce the fireworks of his second round to maintain his charge up the standings.
Jimenez carded a superb 66 on day two, but followed that up with a distinctly average three-over 74 on the third day.
