Woods romps home to convincing win in World Match Play
25/02/2008
World number one Tiger Woods has won the World Match Play Championship with a comprehensive victory over Stewart Cink in the final.
The American beat his compatriot Cink eight and seven at the Dove Mountain course in Arizona to win the title for the third time in his career.
Woods never trailed throughout the 36-hole contest, carding three birdies on the front nine in the first round of the day to help him establish a four-hole advantage by lunchtime.
In the afternoon, Woods turned on the style to pull away from Cink in the opening nine holes of the round before a par on the 29th hole meant he had opened up an unassailable lead.
Following his win, Woods hailed his putting as the difference between himself and the rest of the field.
"I had a great feel for the greens this week and once I got the pace the putts kept dropping," he explained.
Woods has now won eight of his last nine tournaments on the PGA Tour and has passed Arnold Palmer to move clear in fourth in the list of all-time PGA event winners.
Defending World Match Play champion Henrik Stenson clinched third place after a three and two victory over Justin Leonard in the playoff between the two defeated semi-finalists.
