Woods struggles again in Illinois
07/07/2006
Tiger Woods' misfiring form has continued into the first day of the PGA Western Open in Illinois as he shot a disappointing one-over-par 72.
The world number one carded two birdies but also three bogeys during his round and was clearly irritated by his erratic iron shots.
"It was a bit of a frustrating day," Woods admitted. "I hit a lot of beautiful putts that didn't go in early and didn't really have any control of my irons today.
"My distance control wasn't very good. My direction wasn't very good. I hit the driver halfway decent today, just didn't take advantage of my irons when I had the opportunity."
Woods has struggled since his father Earl passed away in May and even missed the cut at last month's US Open at Winged Foot but he is confident he can turn things around.
"I know what I'm doing wrong, just having a hard time stopping it," he added. "I'm going to go to the range, there's plenty of daylight, and fix it."
Meanwhile, Joe Ogilvy, Lucas Glover, Daniel Chopra and David McKenzie share the lead in Illinois after shooting rounds of five-under-par 66.
Phil Mickelson, the Masters champion and world number two, and Vijay Singh, the world number three, sit ominously in tied fifth place one shot off the pace.
English duo Luke Donald and Brian Davis share 42nd place after shooting opening rounds of one-under-par 70.
