Woods suffers shock Wentworth defeat
14/09/2006
The long-awaited return of Tiger Woods to Wentworth for the World Match Play Championship has ended in most disappointing style after the world number one slipped to a shock first-round defeat at the hands of fellow American Shaun Micheel.
Woods has not played the money-spinning tournament, one of the European Tour's flagship events, since reaching the final in 1998 but his participation this week was brought to a premature end as Micheel stormed to an emphatic 4&3 victory.
The hugely-popular Woods never looked comfortable against Micheel who took the lead on the fourth hole and did not look back, storming to a four-shot lead and then cruising to the finish line.
Another shock result was also on the cards today as Angel Cabrera beat another crowd favourite in six-time champion Ernie Els.
The South African Big Easy started the stronger but he slipped behind on the tenth and his affable Argentine opponent refused to allow him back into the tie.
Meanwhile, defending champion Michael Campbell had no such slip up against Simon Khan of England as he won through 3&1 despite a slow start which saw him go two down.
And Canadian Mike Weir found form as he saw off the challenge of Australian ace Adam Scott 3&2.
