Woods to miss Barclays Classic
18/08/2007
Tiger Woods will sit out the Barclays Classic next week due to fatigue.
Woods is skipping the tournament, in Harrison, New York, after winning the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and the USPGA title at Southern Hills.
The 31-year-old claims that his "gruelling" victories have left him too tired to compete in the inaugural Classic - one of four tournaments of the FedEx Championship.
Explaining his decision, Woods told his website: "My intention was to compete in all four PGA Tour play-off events, including the inaugural Barclays Classic but the truth is I'm just not ready.
"Playing the last two weeks in the heat and humidity were mentally and physically draining.
"Although I managed to pull out victories in the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and PGA Championship, my body is spent and I need a short break. Major championships are gruelling experiences and usually necessitate recovery time."
He added: "I just hope this extra week of rest will rejuvenate me for the final three play-off events and the Presidents Cup. It is still my goal to win the FedEx Cup and I am hopeful this will give me the best opportunity to finish the year strong."
Woods claimed victory at Southern Hills last week after holding off last-day challenges from Ernie Els and Woody Austin.
The world number one now has 13 major victories just five short of Jack Nicklaus' record.
