Woods wins 13th major
13/08/2007
Tiger Woods has won his 13th major championship title with a two-shot victory in the USPGA Championships at Southern Hills Country Club in Oklahoma.
On a hot day, when temperatures soared into the upper 30s, the world number one held off late challenges from Woody Austin and Ernie Els to secure the 89th Wanamaker Trophy and the fourth of his career.
The American is now five majors shy of the overall record of 18 won by Jack Nicklaus throughout his distinguished career.
Woods had been three shots clear overnight but superb starts from Austin and Els saw his lead cut to just one before he birdied the 15th and re-established control.
From there on out Woods was able to milk the applause and stroll to victory along the 18th fairway.
At the green he was watched by wife Elin and his two-month-old daughter Sam, whose presence Woods said "gave me chills".
"To have her here is so cool," he said. "It is a feeling I've never experienced before."
But Woods admitted he had been worried after a three-putt at the 14th narrowed his lead to just one shot.
"I just felt like, when I was heading onto 15, 'you got yourself into this mess, now get yourself out of it'," he added.
"I just yelled at myself going up onto the tee to do what I do position the ball where I need to put it and
just get it done somehow."
Earlier in the tournament Woods almost capped his imperious display by breaking the major championship single-round scoring record when he played a wonderful day's golf to score 63.
He came agonisingly close to a record-breaking 62 but his birdie putt on the 18th green burned the edge of the hole before spinning away.
Europe's most impressive performance on the final day came from Simon Dyson. The Englishman fired a superb 64 in his final round to finish on level par and share sixth overall.
