Woods wins in Wachovia
07/05/2007
Tiger Woods put together a final round of 69 to finish two shots clear of the field and clinch the Wachovia Championships in North Carolina.
Steve Stricker was the world number one's nearest challenger on 11-under for the tournament, but none of his fellow competitors could keep pace with an electrifying start from Woods.
Beginning the day a shot off overnight leader Rory Sabbatini, a solid opening from Woods roared into life with the sinking of a 60-foot birdie putt on the seventh and shaved off a stroke apiece on the following two holes.
Woods lost his way going one-over on a patchy back nine, but, with the hard work done, it did not threaten to derail his celebrations.
"This week I didn't really have my best stuff. I didn't hit it quite as well as I wanted, but it was good enough," he said.
"I made a lot of putts this week. I made some nice crucial par putts, from six-to-eight feet, putts you have to make."
Sabbatini ended on nine-under, tied third with Phil Mickelson, after his round crumbled with four bogeys on the final seven holes.
