Woosnam brushes off Bjorn comments
07/09/2006
Europe's Ryder Cup captain Ian Woosnam has claimed that criticism from Thomas Bjorn, who failed to make the final 12, will actually bring out the best in his team.
The Danish player lambasted the Welshman's handling of his omission and questioned whether he had the necessary captaincy skills after he was overlooked as a possible wildcard for the K Club competition.
But Woosnam is confident that he made the right decision in selecting Darren Clarke and Lee Westwood in spite of Bjorn's higher ranking than both.
"It will make Lee and Darren more determined. Once we get to the Ryder Cup it will be put to bed," he said.
"Thomas has apologised and the next thing we've got to do is get back to Ireland and win the trophy."
Englishman Westwood played a major role in Europe retaining the trophy at the last competition at Oakland Hills scoring four and a half points against the Americans.
Clarke, a veteran of several Ryder Cup clashes, will return for the September 22nd tee-off after an absence for the death of his wife.
