Woosnam in frame for Ryder Cup captaincy
26/09/2008
Ian Woosnam has put himself in the running for the Ryder Cup captaincy in 2010.
The former captain, who was in charge during the 2006 victory for Europe, explained it would have been his "first choice" to captain the side at Celtic Manor in Wales his home nation.
But he explained he wanted to grab the 2006 opportunity as it might not have come back again.
When asked in an interview with the BBC about his candidacy, he said: "Let's say maybe. If someone persuades me to say yes I might well say yes."
Woosnam said it would be "nice to fetch the cup back" after Europe lost by 16.5 points to 11.5 points in Valhalla last week.
"If the players wanted me to come back and if the committee wanted me to do it, it would be nice to do it in Wales," he added.
"It might be the right time to do it."
Woosnam faces competition from Scottish veteran Sandy Lyle, however. Lyle has received the backing of Colin Montgomerie and has said he would be "delighted and honoured" to take on the job.
Lyle is the only one of Europe's 'Big Five' stars of the 1980s not to have handled a European team.
