Yang Yong-Eun holds off Woods for title
12/11/2006
Yang Yong-Eun of Korea was able to hold off the final round challenge of Tiger Woods to claim the inaugural HSBC Champions Tournament in Shanghai by two shots with a score of 14 under.
Yong-Eun started the day in second place but made four birdies on the front nine to give himself the lead; he made another at the 12th to stretch it further as he looked comfortable on top of the leaderboard.
However it was a nervous last few holes for the Korean as he made bogeys on 16 and 17 only to recover and make par on the final hole and seal his two shot victory in the process.
Woods finished second having shot a round of five under but it was not enough to catch Yong-Eun as the American admitted that his poor round yesterday hindered his chances.
Woods said: "I was so far back and Yang just played a great stretch of holes and just put it out of reach for all of us that were six or seven under trying to make a run at him."
Overnight leader Retief Goosen finished tied for third place with New Zealand's Michael Campbell. Goosen could only manage a round of one over but Campbell equalled the 64 shot by Woods earlier in the week to rocket up the leaderboard on the final day.
Scotland's Marc Warren shot a steady one under round that saw him finish fifth and take home the biggest cheque of his career so far.
