42 per cent of UK adults pray
11/11/2007
A total of 42 per cent of UK adults pray regularly while one in three believe that God is watching over them, according to a survey.
The research conducted by Taylor Nelson Sofres for a Christian relief agency, Tearfund, consisted of personal interviews with a representative sample of 2,000 UK adults over the age of 16, about their views on prayer.
The results of the survey stated that approximately 20 million people pray in the UK with nine million asking for divine assistance everyday.
Tearfund's survey also states that one in three of those surveyed believed that their requests would be answered and found that London was the prayer capital of the country with 73 per cent of adults seeking help from above.
Regarding the top topics that concern people the most, the survey stated that 68 per cent of people ask for the well-being of their family and friends. The next most important issue is thanking God while 25 per cent of people pray for progress on world issues.
Tearfund chief executive Matthew Frost said: "We hope in the future to encourage more prayer in support of such issues as fairer global trade rules, quicker progress towards halving world poverty by 2015 and stronger action to tackle climate change."
