GMB health workers vote to reject pay offer
30/05/2008
Health workers who are members of the GMB union have voted to reject the 2008 three-year pay deal.
Members working in all services in the NHS voted by over 96 per cent to reject the offer and GMB members working in the Ambulance Service voted by over 97 cent against the deal.
Health secretary Alan Johnson offered the three-year pay deal in April in the hope it would prevent NHS industrial action.
The deal is worth 2.75 per cent from April 1st 2008, rising by 2.4 per cent in 2009/10 and 2.25 per cent in 2010/11.
This is worth 7.99 per cent in total over the three years.
Following the ballot the GMB is seeking an immediate with Mr Johnson.
GMB national officer Sharon Holder said: "The ballot result is a resounding no.
"This result vindicates the position of the GMB negotiators who knew instinctively that GMB members would not tolerate this unacceptable, long term pay offer.
"The Department of Health must be instructed to put a one-year deal on the table that GMB members can accept."
