Sexual health CD launched for people with learning disabilities

04/08/2008

People with learning disabilities need more help to fulfil their sexual health needs, according to the Family Planning Association (FPA).

The charity is concerned that these people are too often denied the information, education and opportunity to pursue relationships.

While it believes the social inclusion agenda has successfully integrated people with learning disabilities to lead independent lives in the community, the FPA claims there is a "genuine need" for sexual health help.

FPA chief executive Julie Bentley commented: "Living independently means more than getting qualifications and securing a job. Expressing your sexuality and enjoying a relationship is something everyone values.

"But poor sex education and fears about exploitation can stand in the way of this happening for people with learning disabilities."

She added: "Information and skills must be available to people with learning disabilities so they can enjoy intimate relationships without putting themselves at risk.

"And FPA would like to see more recognition of the importance of sex and relationships in their lives."

Her comments come at the start of sexual health week, during which the charity is launching a CD-Rom on sex, sexuality and relationships for people with learning disabilities.
