Dalai Lama told to rest after hospital discharge
01/09/2008
The Dalai Lama is to spend the next week recuperating in Mumbai after spending the last four days in hospital.
The exiled Tibetan spiritual leader was discharged from the Lilavati hospital today after being admitted complaining of abdominal discomfort.
Last week the 73-year-old was said to be suffering from fatigue after a gruelling globe-trotting schedule leading up to the Beijing Games.
After emerging from the hospital in India today he smiled and waved to crowds after shaking hands with hospital staff.
The Tibetan government in exile told the AFP news agency that the Dalai Lama was not suffering from any long-term health complications.
"There is nothing to be worried about," he said. The doctors have advised that he take some more rest."
The Dalai Lama has been living in exile since 1959, when he fled to India after a failed uprising.
His peaceful campaign for more autonomy in Tibet saw him awarded the Nobel peace prize, but China accuses him of pursuing a splittist agenda and masterminding the deadly protests in Lhasa earlier this year.
