Woman accused of killing baby re-admitted to hospital
25/07/2008
A British woman who has been charged with strangling her new born baby in Crete has been re-admitted to hospital after fainting in court.
Leah Andrew, 20, from Hither Green, south east London, appeared before a magistrates' court in Heraklion yesterday charged with infanticide.
The Crete magistrates' court ordered she be held in custody before her trial but was taken back to hospital after giving evidence for six hours.
On Monday morning local police found a dead baby in a room of the Natali hotel in Malia.
A coroner later said the new-born baby, weighting 5lb 8oz and wrapped in sheets, showed signs of suffocation.
Ms Andrew was taken to Iraklion university hospital where she received treatment for extensive bleeding.
Reports claim that on Sunday, after a night out with her sister and a friend, the 20-year-old returned to her hotel room and gave birth alone.
It is claimed that despite being only two weeks short of her due date, she had not told the pair she was pregnant.
Local police said that when her sister and friend turned up at her room they saw a sheet with something inside but they did not open it and called the police.
Ms Andrew is reported to have two young sons aged three and 15 months.
