Old Trafford to stage Keane testimonial
31/03/2006
Roy Keane is to get his testimonial match between his old club Manchester United and his new club Celtic this summer, it has been confirmed.
The Old Trafford legend will return to the site of some of his most famous victories on May 9th, as a host of former team-mates line up for what is already being billed as a star-studded affair.
The midfield hard man said he was "grateful to Manchester United for awarding me a testimonial game and to Celtic for agreeing to participate in it", with the statement appearing to draw a veil over the sudden departure of the Irishman at the end of last year.
"I look forward to returning to Old Trafford to express my appreciation to the fans for the support that they have given me over the last 12 years," he commented.
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was forthcoming in his praise for the fiery Cork midfielder's "unbelievable contribution" to the Red Devils.
"He was a fantastic player and captain for me and I hope he gets the proper send off he truly deserves. It will be fantastic night for everyone."
It is expected that the 34-year old will donate much of the proceedings to charity, with 1,000 tickets being given out to children from schools around Manchester and supporters clubs for free.
