ITC weekend approaches for Manchester
29/09/2005
Manchester is readying itself for the 14th In The City (ITC) music convention, which begins this Friday and carries on over the weekend.
Founded in 1992 by Yvette Livesey and Anthony Wilson, the world-famous ITC is a meeting point for the people who matter in the music industry, from record label executives to festival programmers.
However, when the lights go out, ITC Live becomes Europe's largest street-based live music festival open to both industry delegates and the public alike.
As well as making a fair old noise, the festival aims to promote unsigned bands from around the world, all descending on Manchester to perform and stake their claim for stardom.
The festival has been the showcase for record companies to pick-up new signings for years, with big names such Oasis, Coldplay, Stereophonics, Daft Punk and Placebo all using ITC and Manchester's streets for their career-breaking platform.
Speaking to the BBC, Yvette Livesey said ITC would be held in Manchester as long as the city wants it.
"I think it's great for Manchester, because it keeps the industry here consolidating. We've moved it in the past because I thought people would get bored of coming here, but it works best here.
"The people are incredibly welcoming and it's incredibly easy and lovely, so ideally, we'd love to keep it here."
