Chimney Pot Park wins top housing award
11/07/2008
Urban Splash's Chimney Pot Park in Langworthy, Salford has been named the overall winner at the Housing Design Awards.
Chimney Pot Park is a refurbishment of a Victorian terraced street that was rescued from demolition by Urban Splash in 2002.
The radical development comprises homes that are effectively upside down.
All the bedrooms are located on the lower floor, thereby freeing up space for the living quarters, which are on the upper level.
Housing minister Caroline Flint said Chimney Pot Park is testament to the possibilities for designing sustainable housing that will stand "the test of time".
"These awards show the incredible results that can be achieved when strong partnerships are formed between local communities, planners, architects and developers," she added.
The final phase of Chimney Pot Park will be ready in October.
Smithfield Buildings in Manchester, which was recently revamped, was praised at the housing awards ceremony for its role in the regeneration of the Northern Quarter.
