City workers 'should consider living in suburbs'
17/06/2008
City of Manchester workers looking to save money on their first home should consider living in the suburbs on the south side, it has been claimed.
According to Guardian writer Sam Dunn, Alderley Edge, Sale and Wilmslow are well worth considering, and the same is true of Altrincham which is connected to the city centre by the Metrolink.
An alterative is to go for a property in one of Manchester's satellite towns like Bury, Bolton and Rochdale, all of which are on the north side of the city.
These towns are "very popular with commuters who are happy to live in smaller towns, but within a half-hour train ride or - if lucky - drive into Manchester", wrote Mr Dunn, who said buying a home is a major step for anyone.
"It's probably the biggest financial equation of your life: balancing house prices with the time and cost of commuting."
However, Tom Rogers, from estate agent chain Savills, believes first-time buyers in the City of Manchester are not priced out of the market as they are in London.
Speaking earlier this year, he said buyers seeking their first property can obtain a mortgage for around £100,000 and live in the city centre.
