Britney Spears 'could face court' over driving licence case

09/10/2008

Britney Spears may face a court date after rejecting a plea offer over her arrest for driving without a valid California driver's licence.

The Baby One More Time star faced two misdemeanour charges over an incident in which she left a parking lot after bumping into an unattended vehicle.

While she was cleared of a hit-and-run charge last year - having agreed to compensate the other driver - the singer pleaded not guilty to a separate charge of driving without a valid licence for California.

The case has been repeatedly adjourned since the incident in question in August 2007, Britney's legal team turned down a plea bargain of a year's probation and a $150 (£87) fine at a Los Angeles hearing on Wednesday.

The 26-year-old's attorney Michael J Flanagan said she was being unfairly targeted due to her celebrity, and does not deserve a minor criminal conviction.

The Associated Press news agency quotes Mr Flanagan as saying he would be prepared to accept a court offer of a $10 (£6) fine and the charge being reduced to an infraction.

Britney, who has slowly been getting her career back on track after a breakdown in 2007, scooped three prizes at last month's MTV Video Music awards.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18818266-ADNFCR
