Stars out for Obama

29/08/2008

Celebrities flocked to the finale of the Democratic convention last night as Barack Obama accepted the party's nomination for president.

As the Illinois senator made history by becoming the first African-American to be chosen to run for the White House by either of the major US parties, he was given a ringing Hollywood endorsement.

Steven Spielberg and wife Kate Capshaw, as well as Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner were all in attendance in Denver, Colorado, this week for the convention.

At the Invesco Field stadium, where Mr Obama delivered his acceptance speech, in front of 84,000 people, crowds were treated to a warm-up act consisting of Sheryl Crow, Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Hudson, John Legend and Will.i.am.

Crow adapted her A Change Would Do You Good song to reflect Mr Obama's mantra of change, while Legend and Will.i.am performed the latter's Yes We Can – based on the senator's New Hampshire primary speech - montage live with a gospel choir.

Among the other stars supporting the Democrats this week in Denver were Jennifer Lopez, Charlize Theron, Kirsten Dunst, Annette Bening and Spike Lee.

And Jamie Foxx, Kanye West and Rufus Wainwright provided musical backing throughout the week.

The US presidential elections take place on November 4th, with Mr Obama up against Republican candidate John McCain.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18755024-ADNFCR
