BNP protests in Stoke-on-Trent for longer murder conviction
20/09/2008
British National Party (BNP) activists are holding a rally in Stoke-on-Trent today over the conviction of an Asian man who killed a member of the nationalist party.
Last month, Habib Khan, 50, was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to eight years in prison over the stabbing of Keith Brown.
A spokesman for the party, Simon Darby, said Mr Khan should have been convicted for murder rather than manslaughter and should have received a much longer sentence than the eight years handed down to him.
He claimed that if Mr Brown had committed the same crime against Mr Khan, he would have received a life sentence.
Mr Darby said: "It's got to the stage [where] it's so politically correct in this country now, that an English life is deemed to be cheaper than someone from an ethnic minority."
He stressed that the party was calling for the same punishment to be handed down regardless of origin.
Asked about the number of participants at the rally, the BNP representative claimed that 500 people were present at the rally.
