Britain "flabby" on security issues, report warns
15/02/2008
The UK's institutional arrangements for security issues are "flabby and bogus", a report concludes.
The Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) argues in its journal, published today, that a new committee composed of Cabinet ministers, service personnel and other security experts should be created to solve the problem.
It accuses successive governments of prioritising short-term solutions which "play into our enemies' strengths".
"By accepting some considered institutional innovation, we shall be better able to meet what lies ahead, and extend to our allies the support we owe them, helping them in turn to support us," it concludes.
The Conservatives said the report reflected the "dangerous decline" in Britain's security presided over by the Labour government.
A Home Office spokesperson said a response was being prepared to the report.
