Cost of Royal Family to taxpayer rises
27/06/2008
The Royal Family cost the taxpayer 66p per person last year.
The cost is a 4p rise on last year with Royal household spending rising by 6.1 per cent to £40 million.
The majority of the money spent by the Royal Family went on travel, with flights and car journeys costing £6.2 million last year.
The Queen's trip to the US in May was the most expensive trip, costing more than £400,000.
Heir to the throne, Prince Charles, also spent £210,000 chartering a yacht.
The figures were released by Buckingham Palace today and show the amount of money spent on maintaining the monarchy rose by £2 million.
The palace claimed the rise in costs came from growing demands by the government for the Royal Family to carry out trips abroad.
