Government 'failing' to tackle violent crime, report claims
21/02/2008
The government's spending watchdog has criticised Britain's approach to tackling violent crime.
A report from the National Audit Office (NAO) says inconsistent funding delivery levels and poor data-sharing efforts have harmed efforts of reducing violent crime.
The NAO says it is not surprised one in five members of the public are worried about becoming a victim of violent crime.
NAO head Tim Burr explained: "Violent crime is an issue everyone will have read about and it is something which a fifth of the adult population have said they worry about."
Responding to the report, Home Office minister Vernon Coaker said the government was committed to reducing levels of "serious violence" over the next three years.
"The challenge ahead is to ensure that the good practice we have developed is applied as widely as possible and we are committed to taking this forward. We will respond fully to the report as necessary in due course," he added.
