Gray wins Scottish Labour leadership contest
13/09/2008
Iain Gray has been elected as the new Scottish Labour leader following a vote of party members, unions and parliamentarians today.
The representative from East Lothian was voted in ahead of Scottish Labour's deputy leader Cathy Jamieson, while East Kilbride MSP Andy Kerr came third.
The result was announced at John Smith House in Glasgow at lunchtime, when the shadow cabinet minister for finance Mr Gray was named as the successor to Wendy Alexander.
Despite his success, however, the role into which Mr Gray has been voted is considered to be something of a poisoned chalice given the current unpopularity of Labour north of the border.
MSP Johann Lamont was chosen as Mr Gray's deputy in Holyrood.
