Judge continues prison officers' strike injunction

18/02/2008

The injunction preventing prison officers from striking will continue until May 8th, a high court judge has ordered.

Mr Justice Wyn Williams has continued the injunction, which was imposed last summer to halt a walkout by prison officers.

The Ministry of Justice asked for the injunction against the POA (Prison Officers' Association), the trade union which represents prison, correctional and secure psychiatric workers.

The injunction was aimed at preventing the union from supporting industrial action that would disrupt the prison service in England and Wales.

The government is planning to reintroduce powers to ban strikes in prisons through amendments to the Criminal Justice and Immigration Bill currently going through parliament after the strike in August last year.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18472335-ADNFCR
