Labour support hits new low

The Independent's 'poll of polls' has put Labour at its lowest level of support since the survey began in 2005.

The poll, which is an average of all surveys conducted last month, gives the Tories 43 per cent, Labour 27 per cent and the Liberal Democrats 19 per cent.

That means Labour support has fallen by a quarter in just two months, an unprecedented decline given the party's strong showing this time last year.

The survey will give further weight to those Labour backbenchers who are increasingly eager to dump Gordon Brown before the next general election.

But Mr Brown received a boost over the weekend when a surprising ICM survey for the Sunday Telegraph showed 65 per cent of the public supported him over the 42-day pre-charge detention limit.
