Margaret Thatcher in "stable" condition in hospital
08/03/2008
Former prime minister Margaret Thatcher was admitted to a hospital in London last night for medical tests.
Baroness Thatcher is still under care at St Thomas' hospital and a spokesperson for the institution has said that the 82-year-old was in a stable condition.
In a statement, the hospital said: "We can confirm that Baroness Thatcher has been admitted to St Thomas' hospital and is expected to remain in hospital overnight for observation. Her condition is stable and she is speaking to the medical staff who are caring for her."
In the past the renowned Conservative politician has undergone treatment after suffering from a series of strokes. She has reduced the number of public engagements she accepted in line with doctors' advice to avoid lengthy speeches at public events.
A Conservative party spokeswoman said she had been in touch with Baroness Thatcher's staff regarding her health and wished her a speedy recovery.
The UK's only female prime minister remained in power for 11 years until she resigned during her third term in office in November 1990. She was succeeded by John Major after she stepped down following demands for change within her party.
