Police hand donations file to prosecutors
26/06/2008
Police investigating the 'proxy' donations to the Labour Party from David Abrahams have handed their file to the Crown Prosecution Services.
The CPS will now decide whether there is enough evidence to prosecute.
The donations, which totalled £664,000, were given to the Labour party by Mr Abrahams, a property developer, through various other individuals.
He says he had no idea he was doing anything wrong.
The affair led to the resignation of the party's general secretary, Peter Watt and was the second time in 18 months a funding scandal had hit the party.
According to the law, anyone giving more than £5,000 in a calendar year must declare the amount and the recipients at the start of the following year.
Gordon Brown promised to return the money and denied any knowledge of the donations.
