Prince Wiliam made 1,000th Knight of the Garter
16/06/2008
Prince William has joined other members of the Royal family as a Knight of the Garter.
He was formally appointed to the order by the Queen in a ceremony at St George's Chapel, Windsor this afternoon.
The prince becomes a Royal Knight Companion - and the 1,000th knight in the register.
The Order of the Garter, established by Edward III in 1348, is the most senior British order of chivalry and is in the Queen's personal gift.
In addition to the Royal Knights there are 24 Knights Companion.
William walked next to his father, the Prince of Wales, as the knights made their procession down the Castle Hill to the annual church service.
He was watched by girlfriend Kate Middleton, who stood with his brother Prince Harry, the Duchess of Cornwall and Sophie, the Countess of Wessex, at the Galilee Porch entrance to the chapel.
