Thousands expected at 'biggest ever' Heathrow protest
31/05/2008
Thousands of people are gathering at Heathrow airport to mount a demonstration against plans to expand the facility.
Called the Make a Noise Carnival, the protest is expected to attract supporters from across the country.
Heathrow, in West London, is already the UK's biggest airport and will get even larger if a proposed third runway is built.
Protesters say the expansion will increase noise and pollution levels, while supporters of the plans point to potential economic benefits.
Opposition group Hacan said: "The government expects to make its decision about Heathrow expansion in the summer. This is our big chance to pile on the pressure. We expect this to be the biggest demonstration against expansion in Heathrow's history.
"It will be all legal and peaceful but thousands of people marching will send a powerful message to the government."
The demonstration will arrive in the village of Sipson, set to be affected if the expansion goes ahead.
Protesters will then spell out a human 'NO' organisers say will be visible from the air. Politicians and campaigners are then set to address the crowds.
Pro-expansion group Future Heathrow represents businesses, aviation firms and trades unions keen on the plans.
Campaign director Lord Soley said: "There is no doubting the strong views that some people hold against Heathrow's expansion.
"However, opinion polls continue to show that most local people support a third runway at Heathrow.
"Local people know that the airport is vital to the local economy and supports jobs and business."
