Bai back for veteran winger role

21/09/2006

Marcus Bai will become Super League's oldest player next season as he signs a one-year extension on his deal with Bradford Bulls.

The Papua New Guinea international, who turns 34 next month, was the Bull's Player of the Year this season after running in 12 tries in 23 appearances for the Odsal outfit after joining form Leeds last year.

"I'm happy to be staying next year and happy to be wanted by Bradford," Bai said.

"They are one of the best clubs in Super League and I'm looking forward to it. But that's next year and first we've got some business this week."

Coach Steve McNamara paid tribute to his back, claiming that the player had earned his renewed contract with his conduct off the field as well as his performances on it.

"Age is no barrier with this bloke. The contribution Marcus has made on and off the park is invaluable and he is one of the most respected players in the competition," he said.

Bai replaces Castleford's 38-year-old Brad Davis as the competition's most senior player, who has left the sport to join rugby union side Bath's coaching staff.
