Barrett boosts Warriors hopes
04/05/2006
Wigan Warriors have pulled off a major transfer coup by signing Australia stand-off Trent Barrett for next season.
Barrett, 28, has put pen to paper on a three-year deal that will keep him at the JJB until at least the end of the 2008/09 season.
The Australian international becomes Warriors coach Brian Noble's first signing since moving from Super League champions Bradford two weeks ago.
"This is a great signing for the club," Noble said. "Trent is a world class player with wonderful skills. His talent enables him to play anywhere on the field and he can cover both half-back positions or even loose forward. Apart from his handling skills he has a great kicking game and tackles hard."
Wigan chairman Maurice Lindsay has been tracking Barrett for some time and Noble revealed he instantly backed the club's pursuit when informed.
"It took me about one second to tell Maurice to get the contract signed," Noble added. "It is a terrific signing and a credit to Wigan that they can attract such star players even when the club is struggling.
"We have a big job on our hands this season but we are planning long term and we are determined to have a competitive side for the Wigan fans."
Barrett had a clause in his contract at Australian rugby league side St George Illawarra Dragons stipulating that if he wanted to leave before the expiration date, he could only move to the Super League.
And he admits that he is confident the move is the right step for his career and for him personally.
"I thought long and hard about the matter but I have always had the ambition to play in England and I wanted to do that whilst I was still in decent form," he said.
"I did not want to leave it too late. Everyone in Australia knows the history of the Wigan club and we all consider it an honour to get the chance to play for such a great club.
"Brian Noble has a good reputation with players and I am looking forward to wearing the Wigan shirt."
