Evans leaves Bradford for Castleford
09/09/2008
Bradford Bulls centre James Evans has opted to sign for Castleford Tigers after being told he would not be retained by Bradford Bulls at the end of the 2008 Super League season.
The 29-year-old former Canberra Raiders star, who joined the Bulls from Huddersfield Giants two years ago and scored 22 tries in 52 appearances, has been a regular starter for the Odsal outfit in 2007 and in this season's run to the end-of-season playoffs.
However, the club opted to release him - attributing the decision to salary cap restrictions as well as the existing overseas players rule - and he has chosen to move to the Jungle on a one-year deal.
Tigers coach Terry Matterson said: "I have worked with James Evans before and rate him very highly.
"He has always been regarded as a solid performer, but this past couple of years has seen him blossom into a very influential player whose experience and ability on both attack and defence will be a big asset to our three-quarter line."
James said: "I'm looking forward to joining the Tigers and playing under Terry, who coached me for a time at Canberra.
"I think that these are exciting times for Cas and it looks as if they have a big future.
"They have been playing some tremendous rugby in recent weeks and have showed the potential for next year, and with some new faces coming on board I feel that they can go really well."
On his decision to release the player, Bulls coach Steve McNamara said: "James has been fantastic for us over the past two years, both on and off the field, and Id like to thank him for his outstanding contribution to the club.
"Unfortunately salary cap and the new non-federation trained rules have meant we have not been able to keep him at the Grattan Stadium.
"But it goes without saying that everyone at the Bulls wishes him every success for the future."
