Bulls hit by points deduction

14/08/2006

Bradford Bulls have become the second Super League club to be deducted two points for breaching the 2005 salary cap.

The Bulls were told last week that they had 'a case to answer' regarding the rule breach, which saw them exceed the 50 per cent limit on player's wages last season.

The club pleaded guilty at an independent Rugby Football League panel hearing today to having a wage bill of between 52 and 55 per cent and were docked the points as well as fined £25,000, £15,000 of which is suspended for two years.

Peter Hood, chairman of Bradford Bulls, said the club was considering an appeal against the ruling.

"We are going away to consider our position," Hood said.

"There is always a possibility of an appeal but I am making no comment on that."

The two-point deduction doesn't cost the Yorkshire club any positions in this year's Super League standings but the gap between them and Salford has been cut to four points.

The ruling follows a similar punishment handed down to Wigan Warriors last week, which saw them docked two points and fined £50,000.

That decision put them back level on points with Wakefield at the bottom of the Super League table after a run which had seen them recover from a significant threat of relegation.

Bradford have 14 days to lodge an appeal if they so wish.
