Bulls hit with injury blow
27/03/2007
Bradford Bulls centre Shontayne Hape has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a serious knee injury.
The 25-year-old New Zealander ruptured cruciate knee ligaments during the second half of Sunday's surprise 29-22 defeat to Catalans Dragons at Odsal.
Bradford are currently leading the Super League with five wins from their opening seven matches but Hape's injury could be a big loss for coach Steve McNamara.
"We're really, really disappointed to lose him like this," McNamara said. "He's obviously choked and cut up.
"It looks like he'll miss the rest of the season. It's possible he could be back if we get to the play-offs but it's five to six months at least."
McNamara also noted that Hape has something of a history when it comes to knee injuries after two previous operations on cruciate ligaments in the joint on his right leg.
The centre played throughout last season and was Bradford's leading scorer. His absence this year could seriously hurt Bradford's chances of maintaining their blistering start.
Hape's setback could also put paid to his quest to play for the Kiwis in their three Test series against Great Britain in the autumn.
