Bulls to appeal Newton ban
10/05/2007
Bradford Bulls will appeal the three-match ban handed to hooker Terry Newton by the Rugby Football League (RFL) yesterday.
Newton was banned for three matches and slapped with a £300 fine for a dangerous tackle on Leeds Rhinos prop Jamie Thackray – an incident that was reported by match referee Steve Ganson.
The 28-year-old was found guilty of the offence and as a result will miss this weekend's Challenge Cup tie against Wakefield and the two Super League games that follow.
"The RFL disciplinary committee has found the Bradford Bulls player Terry Newton guilty of a reckless high tackle in the engage Super League round 13 fixture against Leeds Rhinos," a statement from the RFL said.
"The player has been suspended for three matches and fined £300.
"Bradford have revealed they will appeal the ban, which - if upheld - would mean he will miss this Sunday's Challenge Cup fifth-round tie at Wakefield and engage Super League games against Huddersfield Giants and Harlequins RL."
Newton's dangerous play was overshadowed on Sunday by a grave refereeing error by Ganson, which allowed Leeds to secure a controversial 42-38 victory.
The official awarded a last-minute try from Leeds' Jordan Tansey, despite the player standing in an offside position – a decision which has landed him in hot water with the RFL, Bradford Bulls and a legion of rugby league fans across the country.
