Carmont signs new Wigan deal
14/10/2008
Wigan Warriors centre George Carmont has signed a new contract with the club which could extend his stay at the JJB Stadium until the end of 2010.
The Samoan international, who is now on his way to Australia for the Rugby League World Cup, was already contracted to the Warriors until the end of next season.
But the club have taken the opportunity to add an additional clause to the 29-year-old's deal, which allows them to extend his stay for another year.
"George Carmont did an excellent job for Wigan in 2008 and enjoys both the club and the town," said chairman Ian Lenagan.
"Whilst we already held an automatic contract extension into 2009 with George, it was only fair to reflect better George's value to the club and at the same time to secure an option for 2010."
Carmont was an ever-present for the Warriors in 2008, scoring 14 tries in 33 appearances.
And performance director Joe Lydon said his agreeing to stay was a major boost ahead of their winter rebuilding programme.
"George had a great 2008 and was the cornerstone of the side," said Lydon.
"He was selected for the engage 'Dream Team' and was also chosen as the player's player of the year at the club's end-of-season awards.
"George is the sort of quality player we wish to continue to attract and he fully deserves this amended contract. We wish him a successful World Cup with Samoa."
