Carney ruled out of GB Test
26/05/2006
Brian Carney has been denied permission by his club, the Newcastle Knights, to feature for Great Britain in their Test match with New Zealand next month.
GB coach Brian Noble had spoken to the Knights chief executive Ken Conway but was informed that Carney was too valuable to be allowed to leave.
The winger has bagged ten tries in his first 11 matches down under and Conway insisted he was required for the two matches he would have otherwise missed.
Carney, formerly of Wigan, has accepted his club's decision and admits he is committed to the Knights' cause.
"I know Brian well and he fully understands why the Knights made this decision," he told the Newcastle website.
"The NRL is more demanding on the body than I imagined and I feel I have a responsibility to repay Newcastle for the opportunity the club has given me."
Meanwhile, Conway insisted that Carney will be allowed to return to the international fold in due course.
"Had this been part of the Tri-Nations Series, it would have been viewed in a different light given Brian's decision not to miss any club games," he explained.
"To travel around the world and play three elite games in one week would take a month to recover from."
