Carvell shocks Hull after demanding move
02/07/2008
Great Britain prop Garreth Carvell has shocked Hull FC by demanding an immediate release from a three-year contract he had signed just 24 hours earlier.
The 28-year-old, who is currently in his eighth season with the KC Stadium club, put pen to paper on a contract earlier this week but soon after verbally requested he be released from the agreement.
The reasons behind Carvell's decision remain unclear, but the club has now received written confirmation that he wishes to renege on the deal.
And chief executive James Rule said the club had been "surprised and disappointed" at the revelation.
"Garreth Carvell signed a new three year contract for 2009, 2010 and 2011 with us," Rule explained.
"However, the following day he informed the club that he had a change of mind and wished to be released from that contract.
"This is a substantial contract that reflected the value of Garreth to the club. It also provided an opportunity for Garreth to play into his testimonial year.
"We are surprised and disappointed by Garreth's change of heart and both parties are now seeking to work out a viable solution to the situation."
Head coach Richard Agar said the news comes as "a massive disappointment" for the club, who are currently second-from-bottom of the Super League table with just five wins from 19 matches this season.
"When talking of contracts of this magnitude I feel there has to be an element of players wanting to play for a club," he said.
"Hopefully we will find a solution to the situation but in the meantime I have no doubts that Garreth will honour his present contract to the best of his ability.
"We have an important semi-final coming up and I have no problem working with him.
"I know one of Garreth's goals this season is to make the World Cup squad and I am therefore confident he will play to the best of his ability to make the squad."
