Castleford stunned by Nutley bombshell
09/08/2006
Castleford Tigers have confirmed that their skipper Danny Nutley is to leave the club at the end of this Super League season.
Tigers chief executive Richard Wright revealed the 32-year-old Queenslander, who only joined the club in January, has expressed his desire to return to Australia.
"We are very sorry to be losing Danny, his contribution to the club this year has been immense," Wright said.
"However as a club we understand that factors away from the playing field sometimes have to be considered and that is the case with Danny.
"It would have been wrong to tie him to his contract and although we didn't want to lose him we wish him well for the future."
Nutley, formerly of South Queensland, Warrington and Cronulla Sharks, said: "I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Castleford and will continue to give my very best over the remaining weeks of the season.
"I feel that the club has potentially a tremendous future and would have loved to have been part of that. However at times other factors have to be considered, and family matters, for example my young children's schooling, are of great importance to me."
Tigers coach Terry Matterson will be disappointed to be losing such a key player, particularly after he agreed a three-year contract extension only a matter of weeks ago.
Castleford are currently in ninth place in the Super League table and will find it tough to replace Nutley next season.
