Catalans return to winning ways

02/09/2007

The Catalan Dragons put their Challenge Cup defeat to St Helens last weekend behind them with a 38-20 win over Wakefield Wildcats in Perpignan.

The Dragons ran in six tries to the Wildcats' three while stand-off Stacey Jones slotted seven goals to ease the Catalans' relegation worries.

Jamie Rooney gave the visitors the lead after eight minutes with a penalty but they were soon behind when Cyril Gossard crossed for the Dragons.

Rooney missed another penalty attempt shortly after and was left to rue the opportunity when Jason Croker extended the Dragons' advantage.

Wakefield hauled themselves back into the contest when Rooney touched down for his first try of the game to reduce the half-time deficit to12-8.

Both sides looked to attack at the start of the second half. Dragons substitute Remi Casty added to their lead four minutes into the second period only for the Wildcats to respond through Sam Obst.

The Catalans then entered a crucial ten-minute spell which took the game away from the visitors.

Justin Murphy scored their fourth try of the night and when Clint Greenshields added the fifth just after the hour-mark the Catalans were in complete control.

Rooney scored another try for Wakefield before a mass brawl broke out that caused the dismissal of the Wildcats' Richard Moore and the Dragons' Alex Chan, while the home side also had Luke Quigley sin-binned.

Adam Mogg then claimed a sixth try for the Dragons just before the end to put some gloss on the final score.ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18264785-ADNFCR
