Chambers set to make rugby league bow this weekend
23/04/2008
Disgraced sprinter Dwain Chambers will make his rugby league debut for Castleford on Sunday.
The Tigers have arranged a friendly against York at the Jungle for the 30-year-old, whose initial month trial ends this weekend.
Colin Maskill, the Tigers' assistant coach, said Chambers would be in the 17-man squad. But the club have yet to decide whether Chambers will be in the starting line-up or on the bench.
A crowd of up to 5,000 are expected to turn up for Chambers' debut, with tickets costing just £3.
Rock-bottom Tigers clash with Perpignan on Saturday, with many fans expected to miss the trip to France and turn up on Sunday.
Head coach Terry Matterson, will return from France on Sunday morning to access Chambers' performance.
Chambers has undergone a crash course in his four-week unpaid trial to learn the rules of the game.
He trains with the Super League squad on Mondays and Tuesdays and has spent the rest of the time with the reserves.
Britain's joint 100-metre record holder will have two more training sessions before Maskill decides whether to play him from the start in Sunday's friendly.
Chambers is hoping to earn a £60,000 contract with the Super League club.
He served a two-year drugs ban in athletics after admitting taking banned steroid THG, and is barred from competing in this summer's Olympic Games in Beijing.
