Deacon extends Bulls stay

18/05/2006

Paul Deacon has today signed a new one-year contract with the Bradford Bulls which will keep him at Odsal until the end of the 2008 season.

The engage Super League and Carnegie world club champions moved quickly to tie down their record goal-scoring scrum-half, whose previous contract was due to expire next year.

Bulls coach Steve McNamara said Deacon signing was "fantastic news for the club".

"It's great and he's shown great loyalty, ambition and he is very important to us," he said.

"Deacs is one of those players who you don't realise how important he is until he is actually not there and that's been the case in recent weeks.

"With all the rumours going around about players supposedly doing this and that, to tie Paul up until the end of 2008 again shows just what the Bulls are about."

Deacon, who is due a testimonial in 2008, has amassed 248 appearances for the club and has a massive 768 goals to his name.

And, with 1,789 points, he is currently only 39 points away from becoming the leading points scorer in the club's history.

"It was an easy decision to make," he said of signing the contract extension.

"I've enjoyed my time at Bradford and always have done and there's no reason for me to go anywhere else.

"I'm really proud of what I've achieved here. I've been very successful and lucky to play at such a great club as this with so many brilliant players and winning so many trophies. Hopefully that will continue over these next two years and I reckon it will."
