Diskin faces lengthy lay-off
09/07/2007
Leeds Rhinos lynchpin Matt Diskin is set to miss around six weeks of the Headingley side's season after suffering a broken hand in Friday's Super League defeat of St Helens.
The 25-year-old hooker's injury marred a 22-10 win that pushed Tony Smith's side level on points with Saints at the top of the table.
However, despite the long spell in the physio's room that looms for the player, Leeds medical staff are relieved he was not ruled out for longer.
"Matt had a scan on Saturday morning which confirmed the fracture to the third metacarpal," said Rhinos head of physiotherapy Meirion Jones.
"However, having met with the specialist, the scan also revealed that the fracture was not displaced, which means that the bone had not moved apart after the impact and initial fracture.
"Thankfully, this means Matt does not need surgery and should speed the recovery time."
Diskin will wear a plaster to protect the fracture while Jones and his team monitor the healing process.
There was better news for second rower Ian Kirke who has been passed fit for Thursday's clash with fourth-placed Wigan Warriors despite breaking his nose in Leeds' last outing.
