Duport given six-game biting ban
07/12/2007
Catalans Dragons winger Vincent Duport has been slapped with a six-game ban for biting a Super League opponent in September.
The 19-year-old Frenchman was found guilty by an independent tribunal of the Rugby Football League (RFL) of biting Wakefield Wildcats centre Jason Demetriou.
The incident marred Catalans' 38-20 victory on September 1st, which dented Wildcats' playoff hopes and ultimately resulted in them missing out on the top six and a place in the post-season competition.
Duport has been ordered to pay all costs of the case but also has a right to appeal, which must be lodged within the 14 days after he receives written confirmation of the ban.
Pending that appeal, Duport could be missing from the Dragons lineup until a game against Harlequins at the Twickenham Stoop at the end of March.
He is set to miss the French side's opener with newly-promoted Castleford Tigers and further matches against Hull KR, Leeds Rhinos, Warrington Wolves, Bradford Bulls and St Helens.
Catalans will be looking to improve on their first year in Super League last season.
They captured tenth place in the table and also became the first side from outside Britain to reach the Challenge Cup final at Wembley, where they lost to St Helens 30-8.
