Fielden dropped from GB squad
09/10/2007
Wigan Warriors prop Stuart Fielden has been dropped from Great Britain's train-on squad for the upcoming Test series against New Zealand.
The 28-year-old has been struggling for fitness this term, which has resulted in a loss of form.
Fielden became the most expensive player in rugby league history when he joined Wigan from Bradford Bulls for £450,000 in the middle of last season and has been a regular in the national side since his debut in 2001.
However head coach Tony Smith said he had spoken to the player to make him understand the reasons behind his selection policy.
"I had a really good conversation with Stuart and he has been battling with injury, which is all credit to him," Smith said.
"He'd love to play for his country but he realises his form probably hasn't warranted selection for GB on this occasion."
Another surprise exclusion is second row Gareth Hock - another ever-present in Great Britain's Tri Nations series against the Kiwis and Australia last year.
He has been dropped due to poor form, meaning Wigan captain Sean O'Loughlin is the only Warriors player to be added to the train-on squad after his side's play-off defeat at the hands of Leeds Rhinos.
