Fighting Wakefield edge out Huddersfield in Super League

12/04/2008

Wakefield came back from a 12-8 half-time deficit to claim a much-needed 18-16 win away at Huddersfield in the Super League today.

An injury ravaged Wakefield side came back in storming fashion in the second-half and a Danny Brough penalty on the hour mark clinched the win for the Wildcats.

Huddersfield are having a poor season and are rooted at 10th place in the league, but when they saw the Wakefield team-sheet full of youngsters in-place of the injured stars, the home side must have been licking their lips at the thought of a win.

But it was one of the Wakefield youngsters who stung Huddersfield with the first try of the game. Aaron Murphy received a long ball from Scott Grix, before he used his strength to burst through the Huddersfield defence and score.

Huddersfield managed to get back into the game thanks to indiscipline from Wakefield. The Wildcats gave away three penalties in a row and found themselves defending on their own try-line. Dummy-half Luke Robinson crossed over for Huddersfield and Chris Thorman added the two points to give his side the lead.

Try-scorer Murphy then gifted Huddersfield a try as the youngster made a complete mess of trying to knockout a grubber-kick in his own try area, and Rod Jensen simply had to touch the ball down to score for Huddersfield.

The Wildcats were back in the game almost immediately as Michael Lawrence failed to handle a high ball at the other end and Tony Martin capitalised on the error to score the try.

Brough failed to add the conversion again and it left his side trailing 12-8, but he made amends in the second-half. First his grubber-kick bounced off the knee of Jamahl Lolesi, and fell to Oliver Wilkes who crossed the try-line.

And after Thorman had kicked two penalties for Huddersfield and Martin had responded with one for Wakefield to leave the scores level on 16-16, it was Brough who held his nerve to kick the winning penalty. ADNFCR-8000014-ID-18549283-ADNFCR
